Often I will browse through lists of the works of well known writers looking for books I have not previously heard of or just random books that sound interesting enough to read. While reading such a list detailing the works of Sr. Arthur Conan Doyle I came across a book titled “The White Company”. Though I do not read fiction often the premise of this book seemed very appealing.
The White Company is set during the Hundred Years War. Alleyne Edricson, a young man in England sent to experience the world for one year before he is to become a monk. Young Alleyne has been raised in a monastery since childhood and at the beginning of the story knows no other way of life. Through his various adventures during this year he comes to meet various characters, the most notable being knight Sir Nigel Loring. Soon after meeting Alleyne is asked to be squire to Sr. Nigel. This is where the story really picks up.
Alleyne travels with Loring into battle and across Spaniard territory, unknown becoming familiar, fear becoming courage. We read as each character develops, some fading slowly into the background while other become ingrained into thoughts. This book, which is one of a two book series including another novel, titled “Sir Nigel”, written after but set in a period before The White Company is the true embodiment of a knight’s story. I truly enjoyed this book, which is surprising as it is the first fiction novel I have enjoyed in years.
I recommend this as a novel that everyone should read. A young child maybe inspired to write their own tail from this book alone like many others have and an adult may recall the childhood dreams of battle and knighthood.
